Queen Pussycat Doll, solo pop star and the undoubted main attraction of last season’s X Factor series, Nicole Scherzinger is riding high! Now she’s back with hot new single ‘Boomerang’ and a PA at the palace of pop, G-A-Y, this weekend. There was only one person who could possibly do an interview with her justice… Heaven’s head honcho, Jeremy Joseph!

Jeremy: Have you done lots of interviews today?

Nicole: Yeah they’re just warming me up for you, though.

Do you become a bit of a robot with your answers though?

Sometimes you get into the robot mode when it’s logistic stuff.

I think if I ask you a question you’ve been asked already today, you’re not allowed to give the same answer.

Okay, that’s good.

Are you excited obviously for ‘Boomerang’ to come out?

I am ‘ignited’ about it!

To me I look at the lyrics to ‘Boomerang’ as someone who’s been rejected as a lover and getting back on their feet, but I can’t believe you’ve ever been rejected.

That is true.

You’re supposed to go ‘Oh, I get rejected all the time’ to make people like me feel better!

No, no, no, you know what, I get rejected and I get my heart broken as well. Why do you think I wrote an album called ‘Killer Love’? But, actually, that song for me personally isn’t about a relationship, obviously it’s open to interpretation, but it’s more about my relationship with music, that’s what it is to me. I definitely get rejected in this business, and I’ve gone through my fair share of crap.

So, if you were to reject someone, how would you do it?

I’d do it in a very gingerly way.

Reject me.

Well, it depends on how you come at me…

I’m coming at you!

Sometimes, I’m gonna be like ‘Really? Really? Is this happening right now? Think about it’ and then walk away.

I’m being really pathetic with you.

‘Excuse me? What’s happening? Are you talking to me? I know you’re not talking to me.’ But if you’re really sweet, then I’ll be like ‘you are just a ball of love, I’m going to put you in my pocket and carry you around.’

You are one of these people who goes ‘It’s not you, it’s me’, I can just feel it now.

Yeah, I’m definitely one of those people! Even if you’re splitting with your boyfriend, even if it’s their fault, it’s best to go ‘you know what it’s my fault, I’m the idiot.’

Okay, I don’t want to be rejected by you because I know it’s not real. So, is there a lot of pressure on you at the moment because the first album was so successful, and being an X Factor judge also there’s that added on pressure?

Oh my god, I got through X Factor with flying colours, so I feel there’s no pressure – that was my pressure. It was getting through that, surviving that show, being triumphant, and making it to the top of the mountain with it. Now with music, I don’t feel that pressure for me; that’s the fun part, that’s something I can control – the TV show, all I can do is work really hard and hopefully people are on my bonkers train, they’re with it and they connect. With my music it’s me, that’s mine, so you’ve got to love it.

“All I can do is work really hard and hopefully people are on my bonkers train, they’re with it and they connect.”

But do you not feel pressured that the first album was so successful, that the second album has to be as successful?

Absolutely, I put that pressure onto myself always, but that’s why I put the work into it. And you know I’ve got a brilliant team around me that help me with deciding what songs come out next, and I’m always working in the studio and, I don’t know, I’ve got a lot of confidence and faith in this album and I just feel, for me, it’s fun. It’s fun, it’s energising, it’s motivating, it’s anthemic, and so I think I would feel more pressure if I didn’t believe in it so much, you know. And to know that I have the support and love in the UK that I do now after X Factor, it just feels like a great platform.

Because ‘Boomerang’ obviously is the first track, would you say it represents the album, or is the album more eclectic?

It’s eclectic because it’s me, but the single will definitely carry the torch for it, because this album is mainly dance, it’s mainly up-tempo, it’s mainly anthemic, it’s mainly positive and empowering. I’ve got a couple of heartbreak songs that I’ve written to be sad, that are still empowering, but for the most part, yeah.

And your look, just in general because you always look amazing. I don’t want to sound like I’m climbing up your arse but you do look absolutely amazing…

Climb away! Someone said to me the other day, ‘I don’t really like her, she sucks your ass’, and I’m like ‘suck away because I love it’ (laughs), I mean it’s great when people are supportive, that’s what I mean. As far as the look, like I said I have a great team, I work very closely with Laurie Smith, my stylist, who I adore, and I become obsessed with stuff like the catwalks, magazines, hairs, pictures, books, photography. Everything.

I imagine that you get up before Lewis, quickly get made up, look stunning, get back to bed and then wake up looking amazing.

I’ve never done that a day in my life. Wear make-up? I wear no make-up until I absolutely have to.

So he’s seen you at your worst and your best?

He’s seen me at my worst, but he won’t say I’m at my worst, he says I’m most beautiful waking up in the morning with no make-up on. He’s wrong, but that’s what he says.

Would you let people photograph you with no make-up on?

If you’ve ever seen my video ‘Whatever You Like’, one of my early solo videos, in most of that whole entire video I have no make-up on at all because I’m in the water. They’re photographing me all the time at the airport when I might have some dark glasses but I never wear make-up on the plane, and then, of course, you run into the fans and you have no make-up on and you can’t be like ‘sorry I have no make-up on’ but you have to be like ‘okay, let me take a picture on my good side at least’.

If I could give you three wishes, one is a personal one, one is for your career and one is for the world, what would they be? We’ll start off with your personal wish.

Personal wish… Could I just have everlasting powerful love, I guess?

What about a wish for your career?

That my music will take over everything, and just be No.1 and have the biggest world tour.

I think you’re definitely going to have a No.1 with ‘Boomerang’.

Oh thanks, that means a lot coming from you.

And then your wish for the world?

It’s so stupid, but I wish for world peace!

And then my final question is, do you have a motto you live by?

Do I have a motto that I live by other than ‘balls to the left’? Um, ‘never give up’, ‘never lose faith’.

I think that’s a very good motto, a good note to end with.

Nicole Scherzinger performs at G-A-Y @ Heaven (Villiers Street, WC2N 6NG) on Saturday 9th March. ‘Boomerang’ is out on 10th March.
