Nicole Scherzinger: “I can be flirty and fun- but I’m probably more goofy”
Mar 08 2015

It’s not often Notebook magazine is invited to the Hollywood home of an A-lister, but that’s exactly what happened when Nicole Scherzinger shot her new Müller Pud dessert advert in Los Angeles.

Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, Nicole’s Spanish-style villa is hidden at the top of an exclusive canyon in a private gated community. Inside, it’s just as glamorous as you’d expect, with a zebra-skin rug placed next to a grand piano in the homely lounge.

“It’s a hot mess in here,” exclaims Nicole. It’s not. It’s spotless. Plumping already-plumped cushions, she excitedly explains she’s off to the salon after our chat to get her hair dyed blonde.

Potentially a makeover to cheer herself up following her split from Formula 1 champ Lewis Hamilton. (We think they’ll get back together…) She’s now at home for a while, after becoming an honorary Brit during a stint as Grizabella in the musical Cats.

In London she spent her spare time browsing in Topshop and drinking Guinness in the pub at the weekends. That’s all changed now she’s back in Hollywood, though.

In fact, she offers us kale and organic green beans to take home after we spot a kitchen full of healthy treats Showcasing her sha-mazing figure in a simple vest and jeans, she kicks off her heels and snuggles into her cosy cream sofa for our chat.

When we’re sat in Nicole’s lounge, she’s the same goofy, polite, sweet, pudding-lover you see on TV. Who’s very generous when it comes to hugs. And, boy, do we love her for that…

Andrew Lloyd Webber said he thinks your version of Memories from the musical Cats is the best he’s ever heard. How does that make you feel?

I’m speechless. If I really thought about it, I’d probably cry! When Andrew asked me to play the role of Grizabella, I made sure I put everything into it. I didn’t take it lightly – but his compliment is amazing. It doesn’t get any better
than that.

What are the toughest and best parts of being famous?

Sometimes, one of the hardest things is not being able to have anonymity. Things are always being written about you, but 99% of the time it’s not even right. It’s not nice to think the whole world is reading the wrong things and they are judging you off the wrong things. On the other hand, I get to do what I love. I love my job.

Does fame like yours come with a price?

I think anybody who works really, really hard has to make sacrifices. Definitely. That’s why I know to cherish and make the most of the time I get to spend with my family, friends and loved ones.

When you are in a hotel room on your own, what do you do?

I’m usually catching up on work, but if I want to treat myself, I’ll order room service and a movie. Otherwise I’ll have a deep tissue massage or a nice bath.

How do you spend a rare day off?

When I get days off, I could be anywhere in the world with work – but I would love to be able to go home to Hawaii more. That’s where my mum and dad live. I’d also love to visit my sister and her kids in Tennessee, but I never know where I’m going to be one week or the next.

Where is your sanctuary?

Right now, I feel like my sanctuary is in my LA home because I’m never here. It’s very cool here. I can go to the beach if I want, or I can go for a hike. It’s a great place to be.

Do you still do household chores?

I grew up learning how to clean really well, although I’m fortunate enough to have some help now. Want to know a secret? I clean the place before my maids get here! I have to have everything organised and clean. Even after they leave, I still change the pillows.

Can you cook?

I don’t get to spend much time at home, but I can cook a handful of dishes. I’m pretty simple when it comes to food. There’s an oyster chicken dish that my family makes that’s really yummy. There’s an Asian vegetable rice dish that’s really simple and healthy too. It’s hella good! I can also make good fajitas.

How do you stay in shape?

My weight fluctuates, like all women’s, so it’s about moderation. When I was in London, I was turned on to fish and chips, as well as bowls of curry. Now, I’m back in LA and I’m eating kale salads.

You’re super sexy. Do you feel that’s empowering to you as a woman, or is it more about being flirty?

I think it can be both. For a woman to be sexy, ultimately it’s about having a confidence from within – but sometimes you can just own it, which is what music does for me; it makes me feel like a diva. Whenever I’m on stage ready to rock out, I feel like I own it – but then I can be flirty and fun too. I’m probably more
the goofy, flirty, fun type, though. I’m not that cool.

What’s your beauty regime?

I’m pretty simple. I don’t pamper myself. Up until last year, I’d never had a facial! I went and had an oxygenising facial for the first time – but I kept thinking, “I could put this stuff on my face myself at home and rub it around.”

Is there anything in your wardrobe you don’t wear but could never throw out?

Just about everything! I’m so bad. I have so much stuff and I never wear it. My stylists go through everything and archive it all, but I never throw anything away.

You have fashion archives? Amazing! Are they in a huge warehouse somewhere?

No, it’s just in boxes in my attic, although I do have clothes that go to rental places. People rent some of my pieces, although they don’t know they are my clothes. They are just renting them for a photo shoot, or as a costume piece.

You’re a klutz in the Müller ads, is that true to life?

I love that they let me be myself. They let me have my own personality in the adverts and let me do my Nicole-isms.

Do you like their new Püd desserts?

Yes! My favourite is the chocolate one with the chocolate balls. I never had pudding with chocolate balls when I was growing up.

Do you get a lifetime supply?

Müller sent some to my family in Hawaii – my family raves over them! And every time I’m in London, my fridge gets stocked up with yoghurt.

You’re a singer, dancer, theatre performer, talent show judge… Is there anything left to achieve?

I feel like I’m still just getting started with my music. I want to continue going to the studio and doing music that connects with people. A world tour would be nice. I’d love to do more films, including a musical movie, and more philanthropic work too.

“I hike a lot more in LA, because there are canyons everywhere. I don’t have the canyons in the UK, but I miss being able to run around Green Park and St James’ Park – as well as a run past Buckingham Palace every day. I used to do that a lot!”

“I don’t watch much television, but I love The Undateables. It’s so everything. It’s adorable. I have an affinity in my heart for those special people – and they just crack me up. In the US, I like Inside The Actors Studio, but I don’t think you get it in the UK.”

“My favourite sushi place in LA is Sugar Fish. I miss it so much when I’m in London. My favourite LA Italian is E Baldi’s. Y’all don’t have that in London!

“But in the UK, my favourite curry place is Dishoom. I also miss fish and chips with mushy peas – but do you know what I miss more than anything? Every Sunday I had a Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings and a whole plate of gravy. Delicious!”

“I love to shop at Maxfield when I’m in LA. That’s not around in the UK, but there’s no Selfridges here. I love to wander around Selfridges for everything!”
