Interview: Nicole Scherzinger talks new album and more
Sep 08 2014

Pop singer and actress Nicole Scherzinger was in South Africa recently to be a part of ANN7’s South African of the Year 2014 Awards.

The former Pussycat Dolls lead sat down with us to chat about being back in the country and her plans for her new album, which will be out soon.

You’re here for the inaugural ANN7 South African of the Year Awards. What’s it like to be here?
I just love South Africa. Last time I was here, the Hamiltons brought me as their guest to meet and spend some time with Madiba himself. I got to go to some of the local schools too. They knew my songs, so I got to sing with them. The people are just like angels, they just welcome you, and make you feel so loved and so accepted. It reminds me of where I come from, which is Hawaii, and we’re all about the Aloha spirit. To be apart of this event is just such an honour, especially the timing of everything and to have us to be a part of it is great.

You’re getting ready to release your new album. Can you tell us more about the new offering?
I’m glad that you’ve heard the first single, Your Love. It’s a feel good, fun song. I have my new single coming out now, which is called On the Rocks. I’m really proud of it. It’s probably the most real and authentic I’ve ever been in my music career. It’s a very empowering song and I think a lot of people will be able to relate to it. Hopefully people will get a message of strength and hope from it.

The album title hasn’t been revealed yet, so I won’t go into that. It’s a surprise (laughs).

It’s been three years since your last release. Did you feel like you needed to get inspired again before putting out new music?
If I’m honest, I’ve never taken a break from music. This album should be called seven because I’ve been working on it a lot since the last release. I just haven’t released anything up until now. I’m a perfectionist and timing is everything. We had a few false starts – it didn’t work out for whatever reason – and then I got reunited with my family, The Dream and Tricky Stewart. Obviously it’s a new chapter in my life, working with one producer/writer team on an entire album and I have a new label; new people, a new army behind me. So yeah, timing is everything. This is the time and I have a complete body of work that is also my own sound.

You’ve stepped away from The X Factor UK now. Are you done with reality TV?
Timing is everything. I look at The X Factor team as my family and I’m proud of the work that I did. There was meaning for me being on the show and that was to mentor and to be a friend. I did the work that I was supposed to do and now I have other work to do, which is my music
