Nicole Scherzinger finally opens up: I definitely want to work with Tulisa again

It was a brand new Nicole Scherzinger who I interviewed this week.

To be honest, I used to slightly dread our encounters before The X Factor. Not because the former Pussycat Doll wasn’t sweet and lovely. She was. Rather, because it could be pretty difficult to get her to open up, especially about anything to do with her relationship with Lewis Hamilton.

Scherzy, as she likes to be called, couldn’t be any more different now. After her triumph on the ITV talent show, she’s open and even a little bit outspoken at times.

While she doesn’t like commenting on media ‘rumours’ as she refers to them (case in point: James Arthur’s romance with Rita Ora), she is no longer afraid to express an opinion.

When we talk on the phone there are headlines all over the internet about Tulisa apparently being ‘axed’ from The X Factor.

Nicole says she hasn’t seen any of them because she’s at her home in Los Angeles. However, she makes it abundantly clear she’d like to continue working with the N-Dubz star, which might surprise some people.

‘She’s only 24,’ Nicole enthused about her colleague. ‘I was never that well spoken and articulate and headstrong at that age. I knew what I wanted to do as an artist, but she articulates it in such a brilliant way. I totally have her back.’

I got the sense Nicole would love to return to The X Factor judging panel herself this year. But somewhat shockingly she revealed that Simon Cowell hadn’t been in touch since the show ended last year and there have been no formal discussions with bosses about a new contract.

It was also clear to me just how much her relationship with F1 star Lewis is back on track, after a bumpy few months last year. Any time Nicole brought up his name, she simply swooned.

And for the first time, she also admitted that the intense travel pressures caused by their transatlantic careers could be difficult. ‘There are certain races that I would really like to be able to be at to support him. I know he’s my support,’ she sighed.

But then the steel in her voice returned and her American accent became more pronounced as she declared: ‘You’re looking at an independent working woman. I support my whole family.’

Scherzy has most definitely found her voice. Long may it continue!
