Rumors: Nicole Scherzinger ‘in talks for West End musical Cats’
Aug 01 2014

Nicole Scherzinger is the purrfect star to play a glamourpuss. She did, after all, swish her tail enticingly when she was leader of The Pussycat Dolls.

Now, I can reveal that Ms Scherzinger is in early discussions about playing Grizabella The Glamour Cat in the revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats, which begins a 12-week run at the London Palladium in December and has already taken £2 million at the box office.

‘It’s a lovely idea, and Nicole would be perfect for Grizabella,’ an executive with knowledge of the situation told me, before warning that negotiations were at ‘such an early and delicate stage that it could all be a pipe dream by Sunday’.

‘However, there’s desire on both sides for this to work,’ my source continued.

Song, but primarily dance, is used to tell the tale of a special feline who once had the world at her paws but has now fallen on hard times, reduced to sniffing the old nocturnal smells on the street.

Legendary choreographer Gillian Lynne will be putting the company through its paces.

And while Grizabella herself stalks along with a melancholy gait and isn’t required to dance up a storm, whoever plays her does need a belting voice in order to deliver her famous song, Memory.

Scherzinger, a former X Factor judge, sang at a birthday tribute to Lloyd Webber and he’s very much interested in working with her, if terms can be agreed for her to take the role.

Designer John Napier will extend the Palladium’s stage to enable him to wrap his set around a good section of the theatre’s auditorium.

Cats is based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats, but there’s little about Grizabella in those poems.

Trevor Nunn, who directed the original and will also oversee the new show, told me he discovered more about her in some of Eliot’s unpublished work, which is where he found some of the text that became the lyrics for Memory.
